A study of law today is inevitably also a study of international law. The purpose of law is to order society. Since society is constantly evolving, so is law. Globalization is more prevalent than ever. Countries have understood that the nation-state stands alone in this rapidly evolving world and that various challenges can only be adequately addressed at a higher, cross-border level. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to the fundamentals of international law and that includes European Union law. In part one, the book deals with the fundamentals of international law. Among other things, the sources of international law, its subjects (including international organizations) and also the protection of human rights are discussed. In part two, the book discusses, among other things, the fundamentals of the European Union, its institutions and European Integration. This book is more than a traditional handbook discussing legislation, case law and legal doctrine. In bits of context, it delves deeper into the subject matter. QR codes included in the work also allow the reader to go beyond the boundaries of the book in order to gather more information. This book addresses a wider legal and non-legal audience. After all, law concerns everyone.

Biografie

Stef Coomans is hoofddocent Internationaal en Europees recht aan UC Leuven-Limburg. Hij is tevens gastdocent aan The Hague University of Applied Sciences (Den Haag, Nederland) waar hij mensenrechten doceert. Daarnaast is hij werkzaam als juridisch strateeg.
